Malaysia’s very own supermodel, Amber Chia, announced that she is pregnant two months after her wedding in Bali.

They say good things come in pairs, and our very own supermodel Amber Chia can bear testament to that saying. Fresh off her wedding reception in March, the 29-year-old Amber has just announced that she is three months pregnant.

Confirming the news on her website (www.amberchia.tv), the ecstatic mum-to-be revealed that she found out about her pregnancy straight after tying the knot in Bali on March 25. However, she said that she and her husband, 36-year-old businessman Adrian Wong, have decided to wait for the right time to break the news.

Amber wrote on her website: “I found out about the pregnancy straight after my wedding, and I was so excited that I wanted to tell everyone about it! But knowing that the wedding itself was going to catch a lot of people by surprise, both Adrian and I decided to focus on making it one that we’ll both remember, and announcing this when the time is right.”

Although she is juggling many hats at the moment, Amber – who once said that she plans to become a mom before she hits 30 – promised that she will “work very hard at being the best mum possible.”

Amber added: “Adrian and I are beyond excited, and this is the ‘icing on the cake’ after our magical wedding in Bali. Now the next six months will be the longest of my life!” Congratulations, Amber and Adrian!

Alexander McQueen’s male underwear range

One of the last projects Alexander McQueen was working on before his death last month, a men’s underwear range, will be launched in June.

Alexander McQueen’s men’s underwear range will be launched in June. The collection – which was one of the late designer’s last projects before his tragic death last month – will include basic underwear, sleepwear, loungewear, a seasonal fashion range and swimwear. McQueen chief executive officer Jonathan Akeroyd said: “The development of our menswear is a priority for us, and expanding the diversity of products within the sector is mandatory.” The designer had been working on a collection of boxer shorts and briefs, all of which bear his signature skull prints as well as all over feather prints. The range – which will benefit several AIDS charities worldwide – will be available from alexandermcqueen.com and international department stores. Earlier this month, Alexander’s last-ever collection was shown in Paris. The low-key showcase of the designer’s final work was shown to a small group of people and received a positive reception from the assembled journalists and employees. The show – which was originally intended to take place in the Conciergerie, a former prison – was backed by the sepulchral 17th-century choral music Alexander had listened to while creating the collection, which consisted of high-necked, close-fitting satin dresses accessorised with high-heeled carved gold shoes and thigh-high boots. The 15 looks were emblazoned with motifs of angels and other religious and medieval imagery. Alexander, 40, was found dead in his London home on February 11.

Ruth Madoff Speaks

"i like her hair, shiny, smooth, rich, refreshing and, to me, she's sooo LOVELY, HOT, & SEXY!!!"

"i like her hair, shiny, smooth, rich, refreshing and, to me, she's sooo LOVELY, HOT, & SEXY!!!"

It’s no secret that Bernie Madoff doesn’t have many friends right now. In fact, newspapers can’t seem to write his name without describing him as “disgraced.” But what might come as a surprise is that his wife, Ruth, may be even more of a social pariah—not for what she’s done, but rather for her silence regarding her husband’s tremendous fall from grace.

Mrs. Madoff is aware of the brewing rage directed toward her. On Monday, she released a statement after her husband was sentenced to a staggering 150 years in prison. The statement acknowledged that her silence may have been interpreted as “indifference or lack of sympathy for the victims of my husband Bernie’s crime.” However, Mrs. Madoff writes that this is “exactly the opposite of the truth.” She continues, “Not a day goes by when I don’t ache over the stories that I have heard and read.”

Still, while Mrs. Madoff hasn’t been charged with any crime whatsoever, there are still those who believe it’s open season on the Manhattanite. The New York Post recently published an article reporting that Mrs. Madoff was spotted riding a New York subway. Upon being recognized, Mrs. Madoff, obviously annoyed, asked the Post photographer if she was “having fun embarrassing [her]—and ruining [her] life.”

But that wasn’t the first public awkward moment suffered by Mrs. Madoff. Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that her hair salon, where she used to receive highlights every six weeks, told her not to return. The Times reports that Mrs. Madoff “is viewed as an unrepentant beneficiary of ill-gotten wealth, a petite and well-dressed embodiment of the collective, bloated greed that helped topple the stock market and the housing industry.” Whether or not the public scorn is justified seems to be beside the point.

For whatever it’s worth (probably not much to the victims of her husband’s fraud), Mrs. Madoff has given up her claim to millions of dollars in joint assets. According to an agreement with United States prosecutors, Ruth will be left with $2.5 million. Sounds like a lot of money, but The Wall Street Journal reports that Mrs. Madoff may “still face claims” from government agencies like the SEC and trustees that are liquidating Bernie’s assets.

Assuming she invests with a non-crook and isn’t hit with more claims, Mrs. Madoff can expect to earn about $125,000 per year on her $2.5 million settlement. Adjusting to life on a fixed income will require a significant change in lifestyle. Still, that’s a problem that many of her husband’s victims would surely love to have.

See-Through Frogs, Alien Salamanders, and Spiny Bugs…Oh My!

June 18, 2009

glass frog A salamander that looks like E.T., a micosized frog smaller than a fingernail, and a spiny-crested grasshopper. Who says the age of exploration is dead?

It’s definitely not for Conservation International (CI). Their scientists have come back with some startlingly vivid images of endangered and never-before-seen critters from a whirlwind trip to the Nangaritza Protected Forest in Ecuador, near the Peruvian border. CI researchers came across at least 15 species of creatures and plants “unknown to science.”

One of the most remarkable creatures is the Hyalinobatrachium pellucidum, also called a glass or crystal frog because you can see through its transparent flesh (right down to its guts). This guy’s not new, but he’s definitely endangered, so the find is heartening for environmentalists.

The purpose of the three-week biodiversity study was to identify species and make conservation recommendations for ecotourism possibilities, which the Ecuadorian locals are entertaining. It also turns out that frogs and insects yield medicinal properties, and a proper population survey is needed to see what else is out there in the forest.

According to Bloomberg, out of 14 million plants and animals in the world, human beings have been acquainted with only about 1.8 million. Below are more images of new friends; you can find other photos and expedition details at CI’s site.
