Kuala Lumpur (The Star/ANN) – The mysterious Datuk T has become a top talking point as the controversy over the sex video involving a man who resembles Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim rages on.

***UPDATE*** According to The Star’s reporting, ‘Datuk T’ consists of three individuals: Ex Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and Perkasa treasurer Datuk Shuib Lazim. The ex chief minister stated this at a press conference on Wednesday.

Original story follows.

The Opposition Leader has denied he is the man in the 22-minute video and claimed that it was doctored. He blamed it on the Barisan Nasional government.

A day after the video emerged, political sources speculated that it was “an inside job”.

In his press release, whistle-blower Datuk T had said that after the politician had left the hotel, “he (the politician) realised he had left behind his Omega watch in a room that he had occupied earlier.”

Datuk T, a Malay man in his 50s, said he was “asked to search for the watch in the room”, when he stumbled upon some electrical wiring as well as a video recorder containing the footage of the politician having sex with a woman.

However, it is not clear what prompted Datuk T to go public with the video. The popular theory is that he once belonged to the videoed politician’s inner circle.

“He is obviously someone very trusted by the politician to carry out such a personal task (search for the watch),” one analyst said.

The bespectacled Datuk T signed off the press release as “The Insider”, which gives further hint that he was, at some point, someone who knew of the politician’s movements, habits and activities.

Political sources believe Datuk T could have fallen out with the politician, causing the former to turn against him.

In the press release, Datuk T said he would make available a copy of the video to the politician and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). The whistle-blower has demanded that the duo quit politics within seven days, failing which he would call on several NGOs to set up an independent panel to investigate.

Media representatives were allowed to take turns individually to watch the video.

They included those from The Star, New Straits Times, Utusan Malaysia, Malaysiakini, Malaysian Insider, China Press, Oriental Daily, Kwong Wah Daily, Bernama and Harakah, the mouthpiece of Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS).

Datuk T, who spoke impeccable English, pointed out the date and time on the footage to the newsmen who watched it closely to ascertain the identity of the man in the video.

The soft-spoken mystery man had four bodyguards with him. Two wore dark glasses. They used metal scanners to check reporters, who were then asked to wear robes over their attire before being allowed into the room.

The media has been unable to trace the identity of Datuk T or whether the person who spoke to them was in fact Datuk T.

Analysts said that, logically, the man in the video would know the identity of Datuk T if it was indeed true that Datuk T had been asked by him to collect the watch left behind in the hotel after having sex with the foreign prostitute.

Datuk T also showed a gold Omega watch to the journalists. The watch was carefully wrapped and he made sure that he left no fingerprints on it, telling reporters that “his (the politician’s) wife would be able to recognise it.”

When asked by reporters on Monday, Anwar said at a press conference that his Omega watch was with his wife.

SANDAKAN: Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin got down to business a day after being voted in as new MP for Batu Sapi.

She met Batu Sapi Parti Bersatu Sabah members to thank them for their efforts in ensuring her victory in the by-election, which came about following the death of her husband Datuk Edmund Chong Ket Wah on Oct 9.

“This was also an opportunity for us to discuss our preliminary plan of action as to what are we going to do in Batu Sapi in the coming months,” she said.

Tsen, a piano teacher, returned to Kota Kinabalu to meet her four children aged 13 to 23 years whom she has not seen for more than two weeks because of the campaign trail.

“I miss my children very much. I need to rest a little as I’ve not had much sleep for many days,” said Tsen, adding that her late husband would have been proud of her.

She said her immediate priority was ensuring that projects promised to the people were carried out on time.

She attributed the victory to the voters’ confidence in Barisan and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

At another function, Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said Barisan’s whopping victory was the state’s gift to Najib.

Thanking Batu Sapi voters, the Sabah Umno chief and state Barisan chairman said the next step would be to ensure that all promises were fulfilled.

He said he would chair a committee to oversee the implementation of the promises made during the by-election.

Musa also thanked Najib for appointing him the Batu Sapi by-election operations director for Barisan.

Sabahans vote for Barisan’s politics of development

The people of Sabah realise that only Barisan Nasional can deliver the money for development as they have gone through the days of being in the Opposition, which had left them high and dry, way behind the peninsula and Sarawak.

SANDAKAN: PKR supreme council member Ansari Abdullah was the first to arrive at the Sandakan Community Hall where the Batu Sapi by-election results were announced.

He was early because he already knew that he and SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee had lost big time to Barisan Nasional’s Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin.

“I assure you, PKR will not be in the third spot,” said Ansari, who went into the hall alone. He reiterated what he has been saying over the last few days of campaign.

Just before 7pm, a smiling Yong walked into the hall with his Sandakan-born wife Datin Stella Yong and a small entourage of SAPP members.

Yong and Ansari already knew Barisan had thrashed them in the polls.

Barisan’s campaign was led by Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman who secured the required number of Muslim bumiputra and Chinese votes stopped a comeback bid by Yong and slammed the brakes on Pakatan’s dream march to capture Putrajaya.

The fact that Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and PBS president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan were all celebrating the victory sent a clear message that Barisan’s safe deposit state is in the good hands of Musa.

It is time for Pakatan Rakyat to go back to the drawing board and work out a new formula if it wanted to break the safe deposit state. This would require more than rhetoric.

The thrashing given to the two opposition parties provides food for thought as the votes for them were split. To make matters worse, they failed to convince Batu Sapi voters that they would be better than Barisan if given the chance to rule.

The Barisan brand and politics of development is still a factor for Sabahans looking for better living conditions.

They realised that only Barisan can deliver the money for development as they have gone through the days of being in the Opposition, which had left them high and dry, way behind the peninsula and Sarawak.

Agreeing with Barisan’s politics of development, two academicians feel the Opposition has not been able to convince the people that it can form an alternative government in Sabah.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah head of international relations programme Prof Zaini Othman said Pakatan needed to work out a strategic alliance with local parties like SAPP to be a credible force.

The lack of cohesion even in the slogans used by Pakatan and SAPP during the campaigns had failed to attract the local voters, he said.

UITM lecturer in government and politics Arnold Puyok felt that Pakatan had a long way to go in Sabah to show voters that it was united to take on Barisan.

He noted that it would not be the end of the road for SAPP, however, as it was a home-grown party contesting for the first time on its own.

The combined opposition votes remained more or less the same as those obtained by an independent in the last elections in Batu Sapi but the split made the margin of defeat even wider.

What is interesting is that opposition votes especially in the Chinese areas split three ways with Barisan getting about 25%, said a Sandakan-born Umno leader who believes Musa has strengthened his position as undisputed Barisan leader in the state.

Individuals in Sabah Barisan who are against Musa will have to think again, he said, in apparent reference to certain Liberal Democratic Party leaders, who had taken a non-cooperation stand against the Chief Minister recently.

Dropping to third place in a constituency which consists nearly 39% Chinese voters, Yong will not only have to recover from the bruising defeat by Tsen, but he may have to think again if SAPP were to align itself to Pakatan.

PKR’s partner, DAP appeared to have convinced the Batu Sapi Chinese especially the younger voters that SAPP will be not be able to bring any changes to Sabah if the party refused to go along with Pakatan’s agenda.

Alone, Yong will be unable to save Sabah or even his party in the face of Barisan’s onslaught, said a DAP leader who stood by his earlier stand that the younger voters understood the sentiments of change in the peninsula.

SAPP leaders, meanwhile, are blaming DAP for pushing Yong to third spot by telling the Chinese that Yong’s party will cross back to Barisan if he won the seat.

Yong is a fighter, he will bounce back soon, said a senior party leader.

Galas victory credited to Ku Li’s strategy

GUA MUSANG: Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who spearheaded the Barisan Nasional charge in the just-concluded Galas by-election, said his strategy of moderation and non-hostility helped to create a peaceful campaign.

Ku Li, as he is fondly known, hoped the Barisan leadership would consider adopting the strategy at the next general election.

“Campaigning house to house and in moderation will ensure no untoward incident occurs during the campaign period.

“As proven in Galas, our strategy did not disrupt security and assisted in creating a peaceful campaign period,” he told reporters here on Thursday, adding that Barisan’s campaign was popular with the voters.

Tengku Razaleigh also called on the Federal Government to pay more attention to the plight of the orang asli community, who supported the Barisan convincingly.

He said there was a need for a “new political culture” in the country where negotiation and constructive engagement should replace the present confrontational politics and open mudslinging.

Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and his deputy Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin agreed that Tengku Razaleigh’s Galas strategy should be adopted by the Barisan at the next general election.

“Low-profile campaigning or campaigning in moderation enabled the machinery to reach the people better.

“Such strategy can be used not only in Kelantan but the rest of the country, too,” he said.

Dr Awang Adek said: “We have a good momentum right now. We should continue to use this strategy for the next general election.”

Newly-elected assemblyman Abdul Aziz Yusoff said Tengku Razaleigh’s strategy was the decisive factor in Barisan’s win.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has congratulated Barisan Nasional on its victory in the Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections, but hopes the coalition will fulfil its election promises.

He said Barisan’s victory in Galas was a victory for its by-election director Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, said the battle in Galas was not between Barisan and Pakatan Rakyat or between Umno and PAS.

“We were fighting a local legend, Tengku Razaleigh.

“And, we must concede that so long as he is in Gua Musang, the people there will remain in his hands, even if he is without a political party,” he said during a Deepavali gathering at Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy’s residence in Simpang Ampat here yesterday.

Attention to details boosts Hillary Clinton’s image

November 6, 2010

PUTRAJAYA: When US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came to town a few days ago, it turned out to be a valuable lesson and experience for Bernama photographer Harry Salzman Abu Bakar.

For him, the detailed preparations for America’s highest-ranking diplomat ought to be emulated by other leaders and officials who want to get the best out of their pictures. What was asked by the US officials and aides accompanying Clinton several minutes before the picture-taking ceremony might seem minor but the attention to detail had a wonderful effect: it enabled the pictures to be more outstanding.

“As the only photographer from the official media entrusted for the task, I was invited by the US officials to discuss about taking pictures of the former First Lady of the United States.

“I was told of the colour of Secretary Clinton’s clothing beforehand so that I could make adequate preparations for the spatial lighting,” said Harry Salzman who was assigned to the signing ceremony of three agreements between Malaysia and the US at the Prime Minister’s Office here on Tuesday.

“The officials also asked me on the best standing position for the handshakes, either facing the front or move slightly to the side, after Clinton had signed the agreements.

“After I had agreed to the position that I wanted, the officials then marked on the floor where Secretary Clinton should stand. The end result was that Clinton looked fit and smart amidst the people around her,” said Harry Salzman. Harry Salzman said even the way Clinton held the folder after the signing also showed her appreciation for the ceremony and signalled that “it was a serious business”.

The photographer also witnessed how Clinton officials placed great importance on how the US “Stars and Stripes” flag should appear.

“A clothes hanger was used to prop it up from behind the flag so that it appeared lively at the signing ceremony,” he added.

In addition, the visitors’ book and the documents to be signed had been marked earlier to enable Clinton to know where exactly she should sign.

“This meant that there was no necessity for certain officials to be present alongside the dignitaries. Even the curtain backdrop was given plenty of attention. A dark coloured backdrop without any letterings or wordings on the signing ceremony was preferred,” said Harry Salzman.

The officials explained that they preferred a dark coloured backdrop as opposed to a light-coloured or shiny one so that the spatial lighting would be more accommodating to the camera, he said. “Just imagine the attention to details accorded to their leader in picture-taking alone,” he said.

Harry Salzman was also full of praise for Clinton for her gestures which were appreciated by photographers.

“She looked very lively although the pictures were just still pictures. The way she moved her hands, her broad smile and her gaze into the lenses made a lot of difference.

“I hope other leaders and officials would be able to emulate the examples of Clinton and her team although it may just be for taking pictures. Such pictures have great impact.

“A picture tells a thousand words,” Harry Salzman said. Bernama

PUTRAJAYA: Thousands of visitors thronged the Prime Minister’s official residence Seri Perdana here to attend Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s Hari Raya open house.

The event, hosted jointly with all Cabinet members, saw crowds turning up much earlier than the 11.30am opening time.

Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor greeted all the visitors who waited patiently in line to shake their hands.

Among those who turned up for the open house were Barisan Nasional component party leaders, including MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and his deputy Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

There was a wide variety of food, mostly local delicacies including satay, rendang, lemang, ketupat and nasi himpit.

Rosmah said it was important for the people to be close to their leaders.

“I am very happy to see Malaysians of various races and people from other countries here. Some are ambassadors, tourists, or studying or working here.

“They have taken the opportunity to be here to celebrate Hari Raya with us and see for themselves that we are a peaceful country,” she said.

Malaysians abroad also took the opportunity to exchange Hari Raya greetings with Najib via video conferencing.

The Prime Minister touched base simultaneously with groups of Malaysians based in Jakarta, London, Cairo, Washington DC, Canberra and Wellington.

Najib asked the Jakarta delegation if anti-Malaysia demonstrations were still going on, to which a student representative replied: “We are safe. Do not worry about us.”

He also showed concern for Malaysians in New Zealand following the earthquake in Christchurch last Saturday.

Rosmah had a special message for the Washington delegation, particularly Malaysian Ambassador to the United States Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis.

“Please look after my two children who are in Georgetown University. For a mother, it is a bit sad not to have her children around to celebrate Hari Raya,” she said.
